Fibroids

What are Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around your womb (uterus). The growths are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue, can vary in size and can be single or multiple. Symptoms may include, but are not limited to, heavy or painful periods, tummy pain, lower back pain, a frequent need to urinate, constipation and pain or discomfort during sex (NHS UK).

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosing fibroids often involves a pelvic exam, ultrasound, MRI, or other imaging tests. Treatment options vary depending on the size, location, and severity of symptoms. They may include medication, non-invasive procedures, such as uterine artery embolization, or surgical interventions like myomectomy or hysterectomy. If you are experiencing symptoms, make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible.
